No one is left behind in our vision of the Africa we want.

WHO WE ARE

The African Center for Policy and Advocacy (ACPA) is a nongovernmental and non-profit organization that operates across the African continent. ACPA aims to empower African citizens to take an active role in decision-making processes that affect their lives. Our primary focus is to educate the public about critical policy issues and engage with policymakers to ensure that citizens’ voices and concerns are considered in policy decision-making. We promote inclusive and democratic governance across the continent by providing citizens with a platform to express their opinions, ideas, and visions for their nations’ policies.
When empowered, citizens can effectively advocate for their needs, hold institutions accountable, and work together toward a better future.
Through multiple advocacy approaches, ACPA equips African citizens with the necessary tools, knowledge, and confidence to participate in shaping their countries’ policies and contribute to the development of their communities. Our advocacy incorporates various interventions, including providing advice and collaborating with policymakers to aid them in making policy decisions, lobbying, running public campaigns, and conducting research.

Our work concentrates on three crucial areas that align with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

OUR STRATEGIC PRIORITIES

The African Center for Policy and Advocacy focuses on three cross-cutting strategic issues:  Climate Action, Education and Public Health. These issues affect youth, women, and other vulnerable populations and require multi-sectoral collaboration. Addressing these challenges will necessitate evidence-based interventions, awareness-raising, capacity-building, and creating a supportive environment for policy change. Our approach will ensure that no one is left behind and will help pave the way towards achieving the vision of the Africa We Want.

“ACTIVE PEOPLE, HEALTHY AFRICA” CAMPAIGN

Physical inactivity is not just a problem in Africa; it is a significant challenge that demands immediate attention. With strong links to non-communicable diseases, it’s claiming about 200,000 lives annually. Shockingly, 22 out of every 100 adults in Africa are physically inactive, putting a staggering 223 million adults at risk. The situation is even more dire for adolescents, with a whopping 85 out of every 100 being inactive. This calls for urgent, multisectoral, and multi-stakeholder action to promote physical activity among the African population. The time to act is now for the health and well-being of our people.

The African Center for Policy and Advocacy, a leading advocate for health and policy change, spearheads the “Active People, Healthy Africa” Campaign. This digital and in person campaign aims to promote physical activity and strengthen policies that support it in African countries, thereby improving the health and well-being of the African population.

“ACTIVE PEOPLE, HEALTHY AFRICA” CAMPAIGN

ACPA IS COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING WHO'S GLOBAL ACTION PLAN ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY. THE GOAL IS TO REDUCE THE GLOBAL PREVAL ENCE OF PHYSICAL INACTIVITY IN ADULTS AND ADOLESCENTS BY 15% BY 2030. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL , THE CENTER HAS LAUNCHED A DIGITAL AND IN-PERSON CAMPAIGN TO CREATE AWARENESS OF THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PARTICIPATING IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES.

Our campaign is not just about physical activity; it’s about you. We want to showcase engaged citizens from the region, including medical professionals, youth, women and men, and persons with reduced mobility. The Center is launching an online campaign called “Active People, Healthy Africa.” This digital initiative aims to promote physical activity and strengthen policies that support it in African countries.

Additionally, ACPA will produce a minute and thirty-second informational video that serves as the centerpiece of our campaign. This video will highlight the importance of staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It will feature engaged citizens from different parts of the region, all sharing a common message. The video will also include recommendations from a professional medical doctor, including statistics, the health risks of being sedentary and non-communicable diseases, and the benefits of staying active. We have identified real people from five countries: Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, RDC and Senegal. The video will be distributed through our website and social media channels, ensuring maximum reach and impact.
In collaboration with Dr Patience Mbonge, a medical professional and founder of the Help Association in Cameroon, we will organize a walk-the-talk event in Buea on May 25th, 2024. The walk will mobilize people of all ages to participate in the Health for All challenge. The walk will commence at Bongo Square (Grand Stand) and end at Check Point. Dr. Mbonge will also speak at the event to discuss the health benefits of staying active. We will also provide participants with free medical screening for hypertension and obesity.
African Governments must strengthen policies that support physical activity in African countries. This is a crucial step towards a healthier Africa, and we need your support to make it happen.
Are you ready to make a difference? The Active People, Healthy Africa campaign will start on May 20, 2024. Join us in promoting physical activity and improving the health and well-being of African individuals and communities.
