Strategic Priorities

The African Center for Policy and Advocacy focuses on four cross-cutting strategic issues: Good Governance, Education, Health, and Climate. These interconnected challenges impact youth, women, and other vulnerable populations and require multi-sectoral collaboration. Strengthening governance frameworks is essential to ensuring transparency, accountability, and inclusive decision-making in addressing health disparities, educational access, and climate resilience. Tackling these issues demands evidence-based interventions, awareness-raising

At ACPA, we believe that a safe learning environment is a fundamental right. When education is secure and accessible, vulnerable communities can grow, unlocking opportunities for lifelong learning, economic empowerment, and social progress.

Many school-age children, especially young girls, face barriers to education due to financial hardship, gender inequality, and child marriage. To combat this, we provide targeted scholarships for children from underprivileged communities, with a strong focus on empowering girls in STEM and digital education. These scholarships ease the financial burden, enabling students to focus on learning without the stress of school-related costs. Our program is both need- and merit-based, offering comprehensive support, including school meals, tutoring, and essential supplies.

To further improve student retention – particularly for girls – we invest in building and refurbishing schools with basic facilities. This includes clean drinking water stations, proper hygiene facilities, and safe sanitation services such as toilets and handwashing stations.

At ACPA, we advocate for a holistic approach to health—because preventing illness is just as important as treating it. Medical care plays a role, but true well-being is shaped by the conditions in which we are born, grow, work, live, and age. From economic opportunities to environmental factors and private sector practices, these non-medical influences determine health outcomes. By addressing these root causes, we can build healthier, more resilient communities across Africa.

Our priority is to address the key factors that shape health outcomes, focusing on understanding and reducing the social and commercial influences that impact well-being. We take a two-pronged approach, combining policy advocacy with public awareness initiatives to drive meaningful change.

A key part of our work is educating young people about the various factors that affect their health, especially in an era of growing digital influence. We actively combat health misinformation and equip citizens with the knowledge to make informed choices. Through partnerships with schools and youth hubs, we promote healthy habits such as regular physical activity while discouraging harmful behaviors like tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, and unhealthy diets high in sugar and processed foods.

Climate change is a global crisis, but its impacts hit Africa’s frontline communities and young people the hardest. Despite facing the most severe consequences, many remain unaware or lack the resources to take action. At ACPA, we advocate for climate justice by raising awareness, equipping communities with knowledge, and driving policies that empower Africa’s most vulnerable to lead the fight against climate change.

We focus on three key areas: climate education, policy development, and community engagement, ensuring that those most affected—women, youth, and vulnerable communities—play an active role in building a sustainable future.

We aim to cultivate a generation of climate-literate Africans who can advocate for effective mitigation and adaptation strategies within their communities. To achieve this, we engage with local and national stakeholders, assisting them in understanding the far-reaching effects of climate change on individuals and society. We emphasise how daily actions contribute to climate challenges and highlight practical solutions for reducing environmental impact. While our primary focus is climate change’s health and economic consequences, we also address other evidence-based effects affecting our target communities.

Good governance is key to achieving sustainable development and shaping policies that impact education, health, and climate resilience. We advocate for governance systems that are transparent, accountable, and inclusive, ensuring that decision-making processes reflect the voices of all citizens, particularly youth, women, and vulnerable populations. By promoting participatory governance, we empower communities to influence policies directly affecting their well-being and future.

Weak institutions, corruption, and a lack of public participation hinder access to basic services and exacerbate inequalities. We tackle these challenges by advocating for policy reforms, institutional strengthening, and leadership that upholds human rights, equity, and democracy.

As governance practices should empower rather than exclude, we engage policymakers, civil society, and grassroots movements to foster systemic reforms through capacity-building, awareness campaigns, and policy dialogues.

By strengthening democratic institutions and promoting accountable leadership, we ensure governance is inclusive, effective, and responsive to community needs, laying the groundwork for sustainable and equitable development across Africa.
