Strategic Priorities

The African Center for Policy and Advocacy focuses on three cross-cutting strategic issues: Education, Health, and Climate. These issues affect youth, women, and other vulnerable populations and require multi-sectoral collaboration. Addressing these challenges will necessitate evidence-based interventions, awareness-raising, capacity-building, and a supportive environment for policy change.

At ACPA, we recognize that establishing a secure environment for learning is not just essential—it’s a fundamental right. A safe educational space ensures that vulnerable communities receive extended and quality education, ultimately driving their economic and social empowerment.

We have seen that many school-age children, particularly young girls, cannot attend or remain in school due to financial difficulties, gender inequality, and child marriages. To address this, we offer scholarships targeted explicitly at school-age children from underprivileged communities, focusing on empowering young girls in STEM and digitization. These scholarships are designed to alleviate the financial burden of education, allowing students to concentrate on their studies without the constant worry of costs. Our scholarship program is both need- and merit-based, providing comprehensive support that includes meals at school, tutoring, and necessary school supplies.
To further enhance student retention, particularly among girls, ACPA invests in constructing or refurbishing schools with essential facilities. This includes access to clean water through drinking stations and proper hygiene and sanitation facilities such as toilets and hand-washing stations.
Understanding why people become ill is crucial for preventing diseases and enhancing overall well-being. Medical care, while necessary, addresses only a tiny part of overall health. Health is affected by various non-medical factors, including the circumstances of our birth, growth, work, living environment, aging, and activities in the private sector.
Our priority is to address the determinants of health, with a specific focus on understanding and mitigating the social and commercial factors that impact overall health and well-being. Our dual approach includes implementing policy-level interventions and raising awareness through targeted initiatives.
We will educate young people about the various factors that can impact their health and dispel health-related misinformation, mainly as digital influences grow in our societies. For example, we plan to collaborate with youth hubs such as schools to advocate for healthy habits, including regular physical activity, while discouraging unhealthy behaviors like tobacco use, harmful alcohol consumption, and the intake of unhealthy foods and sugary drinks.

The effects of climate change are undeniable worldwide. While the impacts vary by country, only some in Africa, especially young people and frontline communities, are knowledgeable and aware of the climate issues despite bearing the brunt of the consequences.

We focus on three main areas: educating people about climate change, developing policies to address climate issues, and helping the most affected communities, women, and young people participate in creating a sustainable future.
We aim to develop a critical mass of climate-literate Africans so that they can actively advocate for practical climate mitigation and adaptation measures in their communities. This will involve engaging with various stakeholders at local and national levels to help them grasp the impact of climate on individuals and society and how their daily actions affect the climate. While we focus on climate change’s health and economic effects, we will also consider other evidence-based impacts of climate change in our targeted communities.
